Well this should be short, but an update is long overdue. Blog posts have slowed this fall, but just because actual work at the shed has been rolling. It has been forever since I have posted, so I figured that I would let you all know we are still here! The boys are preparing for the first hunting season with the shed as a hunting cabin and they could not be happier. A few casual hunts have occured at Flintshire since bow season is upon us, but the boys are hosting the shed's grand opening with an intimate hunt mid-November. I am sure we will post plenty of blog posts before then to catch you up to speed. Since Andy's doors were installed in the last post, a lot of progress has been made. I'll leave the details for a future post, but just to intice you to keep a eye on the blog I will let you know some outside improvements have been made as well as some interior decorating. (note the old Ducks Unlimited goose print in picture) A lot of wives have generously donated their husbands outdoorsy artwork for the shed, which has made the cabin very nice. I personally was pumped to clear out the random deer pictures from the basement. The most recent decisions have surrounded the bunks, which should be ready to go this week in anticipation of the men's slumber party in November. The blacksmith shed has also been the site for a lovely family photo shoot since obviously it is Andy's favorite place. Thanks to our friend Barbara for the above picture and putting up with our shenanigans during the shoot. Happy hunting and we will update everyone soon!Carter Fitchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15515553287391174694noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4591337705822548517.post-35173221907510500012012-08-15T21:55:00.001-04:002012-08-15T21:58:01.685-04:00Wednesday Zen 9

Most of the surrounding barns have a hodge-podge medely of handles, latches, and locks - more of a vernacular approach than that of a conhesive hardware schedule. After much thought, it seemed that making wooden door handles would prove to be a simple and inexpensive solution. I also did some internet research on different types of wooden door latches to accompany the yet to be built wooden handles. The "tippecanoe" door latch caught my eye and I thought that it would work well in our application with a few small modifications. I did purchase a cheap cane bolt for the one door that would remain "fixed" during everyday use. This door also contains the strike for the door latch that is mounted on the other (the operable) door. A person can operate the latch from both inside the run-in area or from the outside What follows are pictures of the door hardware manufacturing process and install:
This was a big step in the overall scope of the project for several reasons. We now have all the doors installed on the building and these doors are also a fairly prominent feature of the building's main facade. The doors are still pretty green (built from rough sawn yellow pine) and as such were difficult for just one person to horse around. Fortunately, Davey, Byrd, Adam, and Catherine were all available to lend a hand for the install. What follows are some pictures of us hanging the doors. Still more finish work to come on the doors but I'm excited that they are up!
I was able track down some rough sawn yellow pine from a local sawmill (<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">http://www.fergusoncustomsawmill.com/<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">) and built the doors one Saturday with some help from brother David. We decided to go with yellow pine as our like/kind door building material because the existing siding on the Blacksmith Shed is yellow pine and so, being that we had no evidence to persuade us otherwise, we went with that as acceptable logic.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I would highly recommend to anyone that is interested in rough sawn material or any other cool rough millwork projects to look up the guys over at Ferguson - Kyle runs a nice operation over there.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I am going to post the barn door project in several parts because there are so many pictures. This first post deals with the construction of the actual doors.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: small;">In the beginning, there was a drawing... We didn't have any archival evidence of what the original doors looked like so I looked to other barns on the farm for design ideas. Most barn doors just have the classic z-bracing. We really wanted to let as much light into the run-in area as possible so I incorporated some salvaged windows into the design and this is what we came up with.

We would have preferred to have a custom copper conestoga-style cap made but it was cost prohibitive. We painted this one back prior to installation. The install provided nice views given all the greenery present this time of year; much different that when we started the project 5 or so months ago.
Like many project items on the Blacksmith Shed, there was much consternation over the "right" approach to, well, the approach. Various entry stair options were discussed and after examining a range of factors, a front runner was crowned. And while a set of stairs built out of old railroad ties was thought to be practical, contextually compatible, and readily available, an unknown termite infestation forced us to move in a different direction. The result was a set of stairs made out of salvaged pine timbers that we had saved from a past job. Although they are not creosote-soaked like the railroad ties, we have taken some weather-proofing measures as described below. The finished product has an understated effect that upon closer examination reveals a surprising level of craftsmanship; much like the overall impression the Blacksmith Shed imparts on visitor.
After much deliberation, it was decided that we would embrace a limited but traditional paint scheme that involved the doors and windows as well as their associated trims. Windows, window casings, and door casings will be a soft gloss white and doors will be a black forest green. With the exception of the roof, no other surfaces will be receiving paint. Once the new siding greys, we may add a clear preservative but a few seasons must pass first. The following pictures document the paint process up to the final coat of door paint:
When we first began our restoration efforts, this door was the only remaining door that was still halfway intact. Although this door was still "hanging on," it was doing so in a non-functioning state and was in need of serious repairs. We decided to remove the door and have it stored for potential restoration and re-use. In the mean time, we were able to better direct our search for replacement doors thanks to the information provided by the original. We were able to locate three doors that shared the same panel arrangement as the removed door but that also had glass replacing the upper panel sections. This feature was a nice bonus since the Blacksmith Shed lacks electricity and we like the idea of letting as much natural light in as possible. The other two doors have been installed and are documented in past blog posts. The installation of the third door has been documented as follows:
The roof had been primed shortly after the commencement of the Blacksmith Shed restoration efforts. We had been anxiously awaiting the proper seasoning period to pass beforing jumping back up on the roof and applying the top coat. It appears that the time has finally arrived and as you can see, Jay made quick work of things under the watchful eye of straw boss Byrd.

<span style="font-family: "Georgia","serif"; font-size: 13pt; line-height: 115%;">From the beginnning it had been determined that a
twofold approach would be undertaken in restoring the Blacksmith Shed. Our aim was to focus on sealing the building's
envelope while entertaining "catalyst" projects as we
progressed. This approach was developed
in an effort to maximize enthusiasm while steadfastly completing important project
benchmarks.

<span style="font-family: "Georgia","serif"; font-size: 13pt; line-height: 115%;">To date we've maintained a pretty good balance of completing both fun tasks as well as necessary ones. There
remained, however, one glaring deficiency in our envelope sealing efforts; the
siding. The west side of the blacksmith
shed was in a state that could only be described as that of a
"particularly scandalous condition."
Clearing this hurdle posed quite a conundrum in regards to the
opportunity cost of our limited work weekends; especially in light of crowded social and
family schedules. The best approach seemed to be outsourcing this portion
of the project. Enter Greg.

<span style="font-family: "Georgia","serif"; font-size: 13pt; line-height: 115%;">
Greg is a barn restorationist who has worked on other barns and
outbuildings throughout the Virginia Piedmont as well as in the Northern Neck. We showed him the project and he and his crew
felt that they were up for the task. The
plan was to remove what was left of the siding on the most-troubled, west side
and reside this entire elevation with new rough sawn material. The removed siding would then be reused on
the remaining three sides as allowable; supplementing with the new rough sawn stock
as needed. Greg did an excellent job and
it appears that the Blacksmith Shed has really turned a corner in the overall
project scope. What follows are exterior
"before and after" photos showing the siding repairs on the west side of the Blacksmith Shed:

<span style="font-family: "Georgia","serif"; font-size: 13pt; line-height: 115%;">I took the reading room woodstove out to the Blacksmith Shed
and reassembled it. It had been in the
shop for repairs and paintwork. It looks
awfully nice now that it is back in place and sporting a new paint job. We still need to install the thimble into the
chimney and work out the stove pipe from the stove to the thimble. I imagine that we will put an in-line damper
in this section of stove pipe as well;
this thimble is actually higher up the chimney than the one for the big
stove in the run-in area. The shed is
really starting to come together and it will be exciting to get this little
project wrapped up. What follows are pictures of the reassembled stove:

<span style="font-family: "Georgia", "serif"; font-size: 13pt; line-height: 115%;">The wood stove that I am currently restoring is going to go into the reading room as I stated in the prior post. It will be interesting to see how both stoves add to the spaces in which they are being used; they are vastly different in many ways. It’s the hope that the big double-banger barrel stove that is located in the run-in area will do the bulk of the heating for the run-in area as well as for the bunk room. The bunk room floor vents will hopefully assist in facilitating this process.

<span style="font-family: "Georgia", "serif"; font-size: 13pt; line-height: 115%;">The reading room is a one story add-on to the original Blacksmith Shed structure that now contains the only access to the bunk room. This access is a small set of stairs. I doubt that the reading room woodstove will heat the bunk room. It should, however, provide a comfortable ambiance if one decides to retreat from the late night fatuities of the run-in area but wants to chill out for a bit prior to hitting the sack. Perhaps this room will become a place to enjoy a tall glass of bourbon and a few passages from a good book. It’s also been suggested that this room would be a good location to keep a hunting journal/guest log. However it works out, we are hoping that both stoves will share the commonality of being functional once I get this one reinstalled. Here are some pics of the paintwork on the reading room woodstove:

This woodstove belongs to Gordo and was used by him when he was used to guide hunts at a nearby hunting peserve. The stove will work great as a space heater for the reading room and there is already a stone hearth in place to set it on. As a bonus, this stove has two cook hatches! This stove actually may end up being a better cookstove than the beast that we have in the run-in portion of the Shed.

One of the legs was broke on the stove but fortunately we were able to find both pieces on site. I got a friend to make the repair so after a little elbow grease and paint the woodstove should be good as new! Here are a few pics of the start of the restoration process:

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The workdays at the shed have been less frequent of late with
the spring social season being in full swing.
Weddings, bachelor parties, and mini-vacations have all occupied the
better part of most weekends.
That being said, we have been making the most of our time at the shed
when we can manage to get out there.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Recently, we tucked into the floor repairs in the bunk
room. The area around the chimney was
the spot that needed the most attention.
If you recall from the insulation video, Will and I worked on replacing
rotted ceiling boards that were adjacent to the chimney prior to insulating
the attic space. The area where a
chimney penetrates a roof is often one of the first spots to have
problems. The Blacksmith Shed roof doesn't
have a chimney cricket in place. Over the years, snow and debris
would accumulate on the backside of the chimney and this cycle eventually led to the failure
of the roof flashing at this location. As
our initial focus was to tighten up the building envelope, this roof repair was
one of the first things completed and there are photos of Jay working on this in
earlier blog posts.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The floor repairs in the bunk room represent a benchmark of
sorts for the project. This room is now
100% done with the exception of the installation of bunk beds or lofts for
sleeping. The room has a dutch door with
a shooting window, two operable windows, an insulated attic space above, and
all woodworking repairs complete. A
detail that you may notice in the following pictures is the installation of
heart pine and cherry floor vents. These
vents are located directly above the massive woodstove in the run-in area
below. We are hoping that with the attic
being insulated and the woodstove rolling below that the bunk room will stay
toasty enough during hunting season.
Time will tell on this theory though.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The last workday at the shed was a super productive
one. Low temps and spitting rain did
little to slow down a solid crew of Will, Adam, Byrd and I. Adam brought out his trailer and insulating
equipment to the worksite. We fired up
the gas powered super vac and sucked up two contractor's bags worth of dirt,
dust, and miscellaneous debris. While he
and Byrd focused on the insulation prep, Will and I fixed ceiling boards that
needed some love in the bunk room and the reading room. We closed the day out with about 12 bags of
blown cellulose insulation and some chill time by the wood stove. Great day despite the crappy weather; see the
prior video post which does a good job of capturing the magic visually.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">In addition to the tasks just described above (which can all
now be checked off the list), Will got fired up and installed one of the
reading room windows. This was
particularly timely given the inclement weather. Big ups to William for his initiative. We now have one window left to do which is on
site ready to go if anybody was to get froggy again.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

What follows is a video demonstrating the methodology of making a building with a few air leaks super tight.
Now that the tiki bar is tightened up, its time to refocus efforts on the hunting cabin.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4591337705822548517.post-3749138241479053892012-04-19T22:02:00.001-04:002012-04-19T22:02:04.893-04:00Bar Rail Manufacture and InstallJay suggested a bar rail on the dutch door as a place to store a cold lemonade while in the bunk room. I manufactured a rail out of ipe (sustainably harvested brazilian hardwood) to match the dutch door dividing inlay. The bar rail has cocentric indexes for different circumference drinks. Below are pictures of the manufacture and install of said bar rail:
